San Francisco Civil War Round Table Meeting
                             Thursday 15th June 2017
at the United Irish Cultural Center
                         2700 45th Avenue, San Francisco

                     The Porter Conspiracy
presented by
                             Gene Paleno

Gene Paleno reexamines the actions and leadership of Major General Fitz John
Porter on the first day of the Second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862.  Porter was
court-martialed and dismissed from the U.S. Army after the Union defeat at that
battle.  He began a fight to restore his reputation, and some twenty years later,
Porter was exonerated and his commission restored to him.  Gene Paleno's The
Porter Conspiracy is the latest word on that Civil War controversy, and delves into
the history of the court-martial itself as well as the battle.

Gene Paleno served his country during WWII and retired as an officer in the
inactive reserve a few years later  After his military stint ended, he received a
Bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan and worked in marketing and
management in the aerospace and materials industries in New York and Los
Angeles.  In the 1960s, he packed his daughter off to college in Eureka and moved
with his wife to a 27 acre farm in Bachelor Valley near Ukiah.
He started writing in 1975 and is a contributing columnist for the Lake County
Record.  Besides a history of Lake County, he has written fifteen full-length novels
and several short story collections in the science fiction and fantasy genres.
