Lee's Visitor by Patrick Doyle
|
Shortly after the battle of Antietam, in September 1862, Confederate General Robert E.Lee was
visited in his headquarters at Winchester, Virginia, by Lieutenant-Colonel Garnet Wolseley of the
British Army. Wolseley had been dispatched with his regiment to Canada following the Trent
incident, which had threatened to cause a war between Britain and the United States. He journeyed
south on leave, eager to meet the Confederates, and particularly their renowned commander.
Wolseley himself was no stranger to combat, having already fought in four wars on two continents.
He would go on to an even more distinguished career, rising to the rank of Field Marshal and
Commander-in-Chief. This is his story.
Patrick Doyle grew up in Dublin, Ireland where his family includes an Oscar winner and numerous
nuns. His career as a child actor on national radio ended when his voice broke and he became an
engineer instead. Following a couple of years with the BBC in London, he made his way to Canada,
and eventually to the semiconductor industry in Silicon Valley, from which he is now retired. As a
Civil War re-enactor, he proudly served three years in the 69th New York Volunteer Infantry
Regiment, Company B. Patrick is currently the President of the San Francisco Civil War Round
Table.
