Ulysses S. Grant, his friendships and his legacy
presented by
Peter Robinson
Grant's friends included James Longstreet, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Mark Twain,
among others. Peter will discuss how his various friendships influenced Grant's decisions. He will
also examine Grant's legacy and what we might learn from his successes and mistakes. Peter will
contrast Grant's performances when commanding as a general and governing as President.
Peter Robinson was born in Liverpool, England and graduated from
Cambridge University where he completed his final thesis on president
James Polk.
He has worked as a journalist and academic in the UK, France, Japan,
and the USA. His book "The Ferry Rider's Guide to San Francisco"
was published in 2006.
He is currently the editor of San Francisco Books and Travel,
president of the San Francisco Literary Society and a weekly
commentator on theater and movies at KALW, 91.7 FM.
